This legacy of traditional agriculture demonstrate that the combination of stable and diverse production, internally generated and maintainable inputs, favorable energy input/output ratios, and articulation with both subsistence and market needs, comprises an effective approach to achieve food security, income generation, and environmental conservation . Traditional approaches represent multiple use strategies that enhance the multifunctional nature of agriculture, an important feature for the health of rural regions in the next century. | |

De cijfers van het CPB hebben een onaantastbare status en worden als onwrikbare waarheden gepresenteerd. Op het gebruikte cijfermateriaal en het meetinstrumentarium valt echter veel af te dingen. Daarom is het voorstel gedaan om een 'eerlijker' MEV op te stellen. Volgens dit model zou een MEV-nieuw stijl moeten beginnen met een beschrijving van het algemeen welzijn in plaats van het Bruto Binnenlands Product (BBP). Daarbij gaat het om sociale en ecologische duurzaamheid, verantwoordelijkheid en wederkerigheid als belangrijke uitgangspunten voor de formulering van economisch beleid. Met een model dat dergelijke waarden recht doet, worden de bijdragen aan het welzijn van de samenleving en de natuur, aan rechtvaardigheid en solidariteit; en aan efficiëntie (eco-efficiëntie en mensefficiëntie) rechtstreeks geïncorporeerd in economische verkenningen. | |

| Over the last two decades social differences have grown among countries and almost without exception within countries. This increasing divergence is the opposite of the benign outcome that proponents of economic globalization hold out to countries and peoples willing to open their borders to international trade and finance. Against this backdrop a huge debate has opened up following the crisis in Asia, ‘the worst setback of the global economy since the 1930s’ with ‘wide-ranging and wide-spread’ human costs (UNDP 1999), about possible modifications of the ‘global financial architecture’. Many proposals for reforms are in the air, but because powerful forces promote the growth of capital flows the paradoxical outcome of this debate may well be that the global economy will only be made a safer place for speculators, investors and stockholders. Hence the importance of coming up with proposals to curb the tyranny of the markets and opening the perspective of a different economic and social logic. | |
